Fuiyoh! Uncle Roger has a Restaurant?

Fuiyoh! One of your nephews is here to see you Uncle Roger!

Haiyaaa~ Did anyone else not know that Uncle Roger had a restaurant? I literally stumbled upon it by accident while I was strolling through Kuala Lumpur’s Pavilion Shopping Mall. The restaurant’s bright yellow and orange logo was a big eye catcher on the ground floor’s restaurant directory board.

If you don’t know who Uncle Roger is well then um… Haiyaaa~. Uncle Roger is a fictional persona of Nigel Ng, a Malaysian Comedian. Uncle Roger garnered YouTube fame for his videos criticizing various Western chefs on their interpretation of Asian cuisine, most infamously the Jamie Oliver’s Chili Jam Incident.

And as a proud Thai, I also took great offense to Jamie Oliver’s Thai Green Curry (one amongst many butchered Thai dishes…)

Bright neon orange and yellow lights, feels like I am in a fast food restaurant

I should also explain the meanings behind the words “Fuiyoh!” and “Haiyaa” for those of you who don’t know.

A long dragged out Fuiyoh is the word you say when you energetically approve of something, whether that’d be a delicious meal or being proud of your children for accomplishing something. A dragged out Haiyaa, is essentially disappointment and disapproval. You don’t want to be on the receiving end of a Haiyaa.

Uncle roger fuiyoh tissue

I love the themeing here, even the tissue packets have some of that Uncle Roger sass

Anyways if you are a big fan of Uncle Roger then his Fuiyoh! restaurant is oozing with Uncle Roger theme-ing, from the signature bright orange mimicking his iconic polo shirt, or the various posters with references to inside jokes like “No Chili Jam Here

To even a little stage where you can take pictures with cardboard cut-outs of Uncle Roger himself. Kids will certainly enjoy the atmosphere here. Myself though, while I do appreciate the themeing, I can’t help but feel like the vibe is that of a fast food restaurant which I don’t personally like.

Also you can’t forget the abundance of Uncle Roger merchandise on display, from shirts, to tumblers, to plates, etc…

Fuiyoh!’s Menu

The menu is online via QR code

There are only 2 main types of dishes on Fuiyoh!’s menu:

  • Fried Rice

  • Stir Fried Egg Noodles

Each with variations like the special fried rice (just means spicy) and the Kimchi fried rice. Also you can add various toppings like a fried egg or grilled duck breast.

You also get various side dishes like fries, grilled corn, fried chicken, and so on. Also a couple of drink choices like fruit sodas and coffee.

Overall a limited menu but Uncle Roger is synonymous with fried rice so it makes sense that that’s the only dish they serve at Fuiyoh!

Fuiyoh!’s Pricing and Portion

Considering Fuiyoh! is located in Kuala Lumpur’s Pavilion Shopping Mall the price is a bit high and kind of ridiculous for a plate of fried rice. You can expect to pay about 16 - 24 RM per dish. What I find more annoying is that if you order a regular or special fried rice, it comes plain. No protein whatsoever, you’ll have to order that separately. Even the addition of a fried egg costs 6 RM which is insane.

The portions are good though, quite filling for one person.

Special Nasi Goreng Fried Rice

The Fried Rice is approved by Uncle Roger so you know it has to be good, right?

Of course I had to start off first with the Fried Rice or in this case, the “Special Fried Rice” which is just your regular Fried Rice with some added spice. I also ordered a double fried egg on the side.

First off I gotta say that the wok hey smell is divine! The smoke-y aromas just punches my nostrils, it smells so good.

The fried rice also comes with a side of I think a sambal sauce? Not sure on that one so correct me in the comments if I’m wrong.

Just needs more protein, it’s not a complete meal without protein

Straight up, I am impressed. Usually my expectations for these YouTuber/Influencer food things are low but Uncle Roger’s Fried Rice is delicious. The rice isn’t clumpy, the spice is subtle yet flavorful, the aroma of the wok hey is bountiful. All around this Fried Rice is a certified Fuiyoh!

And if you eat it with the sambal sauce, it’ll add another layer of spicy, and punchy flavor.

My only complaint is that the fried egg is a little soggy and cold like it has been left sitting for a while before it was served.

Mee Goreng Stir Fried Egg Noodles

Even Uncle Roger complains that you didn’t order Fried Rice

What wasn’t Fuiyoh (actually straight up Haiyaa…) is the Mee Goreng, or the stir fried egg noodles. This dish was disappointing to say the least. The noodles themselves are cooked perfectly. Slightly chewy. But the flavor is bland, and the wok hey is minimal. The only real flavor I get is saltiness.

There are some dried shrimp mixed in but even those don’t do enough to save this dish.

There is no side sambal served with the Mee Goreng which is a shame because I think this is the dish that really needed it.

Haiyaa~.

Conclusion

Pros

  • Fun themeing and decorations, fans of Uncle Roger will enjoy the atmosphere and vibe, especially kids.

  • The Fried Rice is delicious and worthy of Uncle Roger’s name

Cons

  • The price is expensive but that’s to be expected given the location

  • The Mee Goreng is a big disappointment

Overall I recommend you dine at Uncle Roger’s Fuiyoh! The one half of the menu might not be up to standards, if you are a fan of Uncle Roger or just want a damn good plate of Fried Rice then Uncle Roger’s Fuiyoh! is a good time. The only real complaint I have is the Mee Goreng.
