Capone's PIzza Chicago Deep Dish

No don’t slice it! I want to bite on the whole pie!

Guys Bangkok has finally done it! We finally have Chicago Style Deep Dish Pizza in Bangkok! If you’ve been in Bangkok for a while you’ll know that this city has all the food you could’ve ever imagined. From Artisan burgers (and recently smash burgers) to mouthwatering Indian Food, to possibly the best pasta I’ve had in my life.

But with all those delicious dishes and cuisines, somehow despite a vibrant Italian or New York Pizza scene thriving throughout the city, we still haven’t gotten a taste of the Chicago Deep Dish… That is until now, all thanks to Capone’s Pizza! A little Pizza stall in Asoke located right next to the mouth of the infamous Soi Cowboy.

Capone’s Chicago Style Deep Dish Pizza

Capone's Pizza

A little inconspicuous stall but one that hides a treasurej

For those who might not be familiar, A Chicago Style Deep Dish pizza is a style of pizza originating in well… Chicago. What’s different is rather than the thin or flat crust of traditional pizzas, the Deep Dish Pizza features a thick crust that goes all the way up resembling a pie rather than a pizza.

The crust is then layered with a heavy amount of cheese, and topped with fresh tomato sauce, your various choice of toppings, and dusted with a little bit of parmesan. So more a Pie rather than a Pizza, I suppose.

I’ve never had Deep Dish Pizza before but ever since I was a young boy and being exposed to American media and food culture through channels like Adam Richman’s Man vs Food and that one episode of Food Wars, I’ve always wanted to try a slice of deep dish pizza, it’s one of the many items on my bucket list :)

Capone's Pizza

Not a lot on display but new pizza pies are constantly being made fresh

Capone’s Pizza is an authentic family owned pizza stall who claims to preserve the traditional taste and essence of a Chicago Deep Dish Pizza. In addition to Deep Dish they also have the classic 12” New York style pizzas.

And the cool thing is they sell pizza by the slices here as well! I know selling by the slice is basically the norm in USA but in Thailand, it’s either a whole pizza or nothing.

While Capone’s Pizza is a small stall with only a handful of seats, the restaurant seems to emphasis delivery, which is alright but there’s an issue with that and I'll talk about it later in the blog.

Capone’s Pizza Menu

Capone's Pizza Menu

What’s your all time favorite topping?

Capone’s Pizza serves 2 types of pizzas: New York Style, and Chicago Deep Dish.

The Deep Dish comes in 3 sizes: 9 inch, 12 inch, and by the slice.

While the New York Pizzas come in 2 sizes: 12 inch, and by the slice.

The pizza toppings are your usual like:

  • Cheese

  • Sausage

  • Pepperoni

  • Veggie

  • Hawaiian

  • And for some reason, Mac & Cheese

In addition Capone’s menu also have appetizers and sides like: Chicken wings, garlic knots, mozzarella sticks, and fries.

Pricing

I think the prices are fair, actually considering the portion you are getting, it’s even more fair than say Pizza Company, about 400 THB for a 12" New York Pizza is not bad at all. And 610 THB for a 9" Deep Dish Pizza is alright considering the amount of ingredients you are getting.

But what is the most bang for your buck is the New York Slice for just ~140 THB!!! The portions are incredible too, one New York Slice is like eating 3 regular sized pizza slices from Dominos or Pizza Hut. And these are hearty slices, lots of toppings, it’ll fill you up.

The cheese is under the sauce

So I ordered for delivery as I had some business to do with a friend, and here is the first (and only) problem with our pizza. Delivery does not work for a Chicago Deep Dish Pizza, especially if you get it by the slice. The pizzas have been reheated before being packaged, so combined with the already hot and humid weather in Bangkok, the cheese melted and basically flattened the pie, the tomato sauce, with its moisture content, slid off the oily cheese. It was basically a mess, we had to use forks and knives to eat.

It’s not a one off incident too, I’ve read other reviews and they also had this issue, specifically with the Deep Dish Pizza. So kind of a bummer there…

My friend ordered the Pepperoni, while I ordered Sausage. First off, I love the amount of toppings. Very stretchy mozzarella cheese, a heaping pile of ripe and tart tomato sauce, and the sausage was bit flavorless but provides a nice meaty texture to the whole pie.

And I need to talk about the crust. I like eating pizza crusts and the Chicago Deep Dish Pizza crust is very thick, hearty, and fluffy. I could taste the buttery-ness in the crust and the outer shell is crunchy with a hit of smokiness from the oven.

Beautiful, I love it.

New York Style Pepperoni Pizza

Capone's New York Pizza

The most perfect cartoon-like slice of pizza I have ever seen

We also got some New York slices, my friend ordered the classic cheese, while I got pepperoni. This New York Pizza was EXCELLENT, the crust was a little thick and chewy (which I personally like) and oh my goodness Capone’s was so generous with the cheese!

Puddles of bright orange cheese oil littered the slice and provides so much flavor. They don’t skimp on the tomato sauce as well. The pepperoni was a bit sour and salty, although I would prefer if they were a bit more burnt on the edges for that crunchy pepperoni sensation.

Actually I think the slices was a bit too much because I was struggling to finish it, it was a bit too greasy from all that cheese. In Thai we call this feeling “เลี่ยน” Like you aren’t full but you can’t finish it because it’s just too oily or greasy.

Regardless, Capone’s New York Pizza is a real winner. And for only 140 THB a slice!

Conclusion

Pros

  • A lot of toppings, they give you a good amount of cheese and tomato sauce.

  • The crust is very buttery and flavorful.

  • The portions are huge and is enough to fill you up for the day.

  • The price is also very fair, I can’t state enough how much of a good value the New York slice is.

Cons

  • Can be too greasy for some.

  • They need to sort out there delivery method for the Chicago Deep Dish.

Overall I highly recommend you check out Capone’s Pizza. It’s personally, the best fast food/delivery style pizza I’ve ever had in Thailand. Of course you can’t beat a traditional authentic Italian pizza, but Capone’s Pizza is up there on my rankings. Good portions, good price, lots of cheese, what’s not to love?

The only downside is that it’s a lot of grease and oil (but that’s nitpicking) and the Chicago Deep Dish Pizza can get messed up during delivery, but that doesn’t affect the taste, only the eating experience.
