Amritsr - Stunning Indian Cuisine in Bangkok!
While chatting to each other about our food adventures, my partner and I had an appetite for Indian food, but the thing is… We don’t know a lot of Indian places in Bangkok, so we took to Google and found Amritsr - The Maharaja of Indian Cuisine.
Our only other experience with Indian cuisine was at Mama Restaurant which I highly recommended, it’s also one of the few places where I know to find really good Panipuri.
After our delightful adventure to Mama’s my partner wanted to eat Panipuris again. Sadly, Amritsr did not have any, but they do have many other outstanding things…
Indian Food with a Passion
Upon entering the restaurant it felt just like home, If I was Indian that is. The point is the design, the lighting, the decorations, the smell, the furniture, everything just felt welcoming and inviting.
I later learnt that Amritsr has been serving up Indian cuisine as a catering service as well as a restaurant for the past 20+ years! Often being referred to as the “Best Indian Restaurant in Bangkok”, so the chefs here definitely know what they are doing.
Amritsr has many branches the one that we went to was near BTS Nana and that area is known for it’s large Indian population and restaurants. So it felt kind of awkward walking in as the staff were all staring at us because understandably we didn’t belong there.
But after the initial awkwardness I am happy to report that the waitress who was attending to our table made an effort to make us feel comfortable by helpfully recommending us her favorite dishes and explaining everything in detail, even checking in on us midway through our meal to ask if everything was delicious (which it certainly was!).
Amritsr’s Menu, What to Order?
The menu at Amritsr is really extensive and to a Indian food novice like my partner and I we had no idea what to order, it didn’t help that there were barely any pictures on the menu.
That’s where the friendly staff came in to help, if you’re lost then just ask for the recommendations.
I do know some more uncommon or hard to find dishes in Bangkok that are on the menu, some of these dishes are:
Pav Bhaji - Thick spicy vegetable curry with bread rolls
Palak Paneer - Spinach and Paneer cheese curry
Bheja Masala - Brain masala curry
The waitress recommended some classics like Butter Chicken and Mutton etc…
Of course there are also plenty of breads on offer, we tried ordering this platter full of different breads but the waitress politely declined our order as she said it was too much for just the 2 of us (she underestimated our appetite).
Honestly I couldn’t help you much here as there are a bunch of things on the menu and they don’t specify which ones are recommended (this just might be an issue at the branch I went to). I can however point to you their menu that is available online right here: Amritsr’s Online Menu.
Pricing
The pricing is pretty expensive for this type of cuisine in Bangkok, although not over-priced but definitely more expensive compared to some other restaurants. However I’d say the ingredients they used are pretty top notch.
A typical curry dish will cost ~340 THB (or 9.50 USD), the breads come at a cost of about 30 THB (or 1.00 USD).
The portions are pretty generous as well, so I’d say the price is fair.
Garlic Butter Naan
To mop up every last bit of curry we of course need to have some sort of bread, and the one that we ordered was their garlic butter naan.
These were good, the flavor was really garlicky and butter however I felt like they were a bit too rubbery.
Nonetheless, they do their job well at being a vessel to carry the delicious curries.
Chicken Tikka
When the Chicken Tikka came out sizzling upon a hot skillet, the aroma filled our noses and I was salivating already.
For those who are unfamiliar, Chicken Tikka are pieces of boneless chicken rubbed with various Indian spices and yogurt then grilled on skewers over charcoal.
These were huge pieces of chicken too, and they were juicy and oh so tender. A little bit spicy from the Tikka seasoning and there are some charred bits as well that adds a little crunch and aroma.
Squeeze on a bit of lime and eat it along with the mini side coleslaw and you got yourself one beautiful Chicken Tikka dish.
Palak Paneer
When I saw that they have Palak Paneer on the menu I was excited as it was a dish that I’ve always wanted to try.
And I have to say it lived up to all my expectations.
Palak Paneer is a spinach and paneer cheese curry that is mixed with a bunch of spices.
The presentation of the dish was great but the taste was even greater. The spinach curry was smooth creamy and comforting while the paneer cheese added a firm texture and a little saltiness to the curry.
Scoop it up with the Naan bread and you have yourself the perfect bite. Seriously, I did my absolute best to make sure that non of the palak paneer goes to waste.
Mutton Rogan Josh
This was the dish that one of the waitresses had recommended to us, it was actually her favorite dish.
I’ll be honest I’ve never heard of a “Rogan Josh” but oh my this dish was so flavorful, probably my favorite in this entire meal (even more than the Palak Paneer!).
I later learnt that a Rogan Josh is a type of curry with intense spices mixed with a creamy tomato sauce.
And oh my the curry was indeed very rich and creamy, not too spicy for me personally, but I do taste the smooth tomato-y flavor.
The mutton pieces were also really big, fatty, and tender, like you can just gently mush it with your spoon and it will fall apart.
This dish might me our waitress’ favorite but now it might also be my favorite. :)
Conclusion
Pros
Great tasting foods, everything was delicious.
Great cozy and home-y atmosphere.
Friendly and helpful staff that’ll explain any questions you may have.
Cons
Pricing can be a bit high compared to other places.
Honestly I don’t have anything much to complain about, maybe the Naan was a bit too tough but I felt like that might be a one off issue.
Overall, I highly recommend you check out Amritsr, they truly have some of the best Indian food I have ever tried. Everything we’ve ordered was flavorful and delicious, and combined with the home-y atmosphere and the friendly staff, your dining experience will be well worth the above average price tag of menu items.
Amritsr calls themselves the Maharaja of Indian Cuisine and I couldn’t agree more!
